Home Painting Basics: Choosing the Right Type of Paint

Now that you’ve chosen to have a painting renovation for your house, it’s high time that

you be updated about the different paint types available and where you can use them

around the house. Hiring a professional painting crew to help you out is pretty much

advisable because they’ll save you time and money and they have the experience to

remedy any imperfections that they’ll encounter on the various surfaces. It still pays to

know the types of paints because as homeowners, you still have to make the decisions

regarding what color palette you’ll use to enhance the space.

Here are the different types of paint and where they are commonly used around the

house:

Enamel Paint

Enamel paints have a wide selection of colors and are produced by adding either zinc or

lead to a varnish solution. When these paints harden, they form glossy and hard

coatings which can easily be cleaned as they’re pretty waterproof and chemically

resistant. This type of paint provides excellent coverage and color retention.

Professional painters would recommend using enamel paint for interior and exterior

walls due to their weather-resistant property. They also are highly recommended to be

sued for windows, stairs, wood trims, flooring and doors. They can also be a primary

covering for other surfaces such as concrete, plaster, glass, metals, wicker and

masonry.

Among the drawbacks that you have to consider when using enamel paint is that it is

quite slow to dry and may require titanium coating before being applied on surfaces.

Oil Paint

Oil-based paints have natural oils such as linseed oil or an alkyd and they are usually

mixed with pigments and a resin in a thinner base. Because of the components, oil-

based paints have a stronger smell compared to water-based paints. Once the thinner

evaporates, the remaining resin forms a hard coating that is highly resistant to

weathering and highly durable. While oil paints aren’t prone to fading due to repeated

contact, it is quite easy to clean.

Professional painters recommend using oil-based paint on surfaces that you don’t mean

to repaint too often such as walls, ceilings, moldings, doors, and trims inside or outside

of the house. They can also be used for metal surfaces as well as for wood and

concrete. If you’re living in a high humidity environment, you’re not really advised to use

oil-based paints as they take a long time to dry.

Emulsion Paint

Emulsion paint is the term used by professional painters to refer to paint products that

can either be oil-based or water-based. They use polystyrene and polyvinyl acetate as

their main binding materials and they are also composed of manganese and cobalt

which speed up the drying process.

Professional painters can also mix pigments to achieve the desired color, consistency

and sheen. They are quick to dry and harden and are also highly durable. Surfaces with

emulsion paint can be easily cleaned and provide excellent color retention and alkali

resistance. If you’re looking to use emulsion paints, they’re recommended to be used for

interior walls, ceilings, masonry and trims. One can use this type of paint for concrete,

metals and wood surfaces.

Cement Paint

Believe it or not, there’s such a thing as cement paint. This is a water-based paint that

can be applied for interior or exterior walls including unfinished concrete and in

brickwork. This is used to prevent water from penetrating the concrete surface and

thereby extends the life of such materials. It is also fungus- and algae-resistant making

it perfect for exterior walls and building façades.

Professional painters use this type of paint for extensive exterior work as it is highly

economical and provides lasting durability. They can also mix in different pigments to

achieve the right color to your specifications. While it is used primarily for concrete

surfaces, they can also be used for exterior woodwork and it can also provide damp

protection.

Aluminum Paint

If you’re looking to spruce up metal surfaces, chances are, you’re going to choose to

use aluminum paint. It is an oil-based type paint that has aluminum flake, which makes

it quite reflective and makes metal surfaces look like aluminum. What’s good about

aluminum paint is that they’re highly durable and helps to protect surfaces from rust

corrosion. Once aluminum paint dries, it is highly durable and water-resistant. It can

even withstand temperatures up to 150 degrees Celsius or 302 degrees Fahrenheit.

Professional painters would recommend using aluminum paint for metal water storage

tanks, pipe and duct work as well as roofing materials. This is applicable for both indoor

and outdoor use and is easily applicable.

Anti-Corrosive Paint

If you happen to live near the seaside and there’s a lot of humidity, salt spray and

oxidation, then it’s probably going to be better if you ask professional painters to use

anti-corrosive paint coatings for any house painting projects.

As the name suggests, anti-corrosion paint is used for metal or steel surfaces around

the house. Anti-corrosive paints are composed of zinc chromate, zinc oxide, lead

chromate and zinc dust. They also use linseed oil as a paint binder. This type of paint is

quick-drying and provides excellent abrasion resistance, rust prevention, water

resistance and impact resistance, too. This type of paint also pretty economical.

Professional paint crews would advise to use anti-corrosive paint for steel roofing

trusses, staircase railings, window and door grills and frames, gates as well as balcony

railings.

Synthetic Rubber Paint

Synthetic rubber paint is as the name suggests made up of polyvinyl material which

makes it pretty economical to use. It is weather- and chemical-resistant which makes it

pretty durable. It’s also quick drying, non-toxic and easily applicable by brush or roller.

Professional painters would recommend the use of synthetic rubber paint for bare

concrete or plaster surfaces as well as for new and old masonry floors, water tanks,

exterior walls and other metal surfaces. However, among the drawbacks on using this

type of paint is that it takes a long time to dry.

Silicate Paint

Silicate paint is a type of paint that has high zinc content. It’s not flammable and is quite

environmentally friendly, durable and weather-resistant. They provide a stable and

durable coating which is quite long-lasting.

Silicate paint is also known as whitewash and can be used for wood, concrete and

metal surfaces.

As a homemaker, it is important that you know what paint professional painters would

be using not only to ensure that you get the proper hue you need but also to keep costs

within your budget.
